Joel Yew Wei Jie
Class of 2021
I am Joel and I am majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and minoring in Chinese Studies. I am from Singapore. I chose to minor in Chinese Studies because of the breadth of the programme, with modules ranging from literature and diasporic studies to the politics of contemporary China. As part of the programme, I received the Tan Chin Tuan Chinese Language Scholarship to study Chinese Language and Culture at the International Chinese Language Programme, National Taiwan University. That allowed me to spend a summer in Taipei, which was an immensely meaningful experience.
My current research interests are in the area of comparative politics, more specifically the role of ethnic politics in post-colonial states such as Malaysia. Beyond that, I am also interested in democratisation studies, specifically in areas such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. Beyond schoolwork, I’m also an active member of the Community for Advocacy and Political Education (CAPE) and the Yale-NUS Climbing Team.
